Atari 2600 – Freeway

Why did the chicken cross the road?
Because the chicken is suicidal and knows it deserves the pain.

Freeway is Activision’s answer to one of my favorite arcade games, Frogger.
You know what to expect.

Cross the huge freeway by dodging various cars and score as many points as possible in 2:16 minutes.
No idea why they choose this amount of time.
There are eight gameplay variations with different patterns and some of them are hard as balls.
But with enough time and dedication, you’ll be able to master them all, which is the main reason I could play these types of game for hours.
It’s also nice that you don’t have to start all over when a car hits you. You only get bounced back a lane.

I would have loved some more backgrounds instead of the same gray highway over and over and only being able to move in two directions (up and down) robs the game of additional depth.
I would like to know the logic behind that.

Some extra kudos to the sound department
The car honks and motor sounds blend in nicely.

And as always: if you can convince someone to a multiplayer match you can easily add a few more hours of malicious joy.
